Varroa Screen

Our Varroa Screen is placed on a regular bottom board. The front entrance of the bottom board is closed off, forcing the bees to enter above the screen. A certain percentage of Varroa Mites will fall off the bees accidentally or in transferring from bee to bee. With the Varroa Screen on the hive, the mites will fall through the screen onto the bottom board. With just a bottom board in place, the fallen mites would just hitch a ride on the next bee entering the hive and, thereby, get back into the cluster. With the screen in place, they cannot do this, and, consequently, they just die in place on the bottom board. Researchers indicate that mite fall may be as high as 30% of the mites. That's 30% you don't have to kill with chemicals. Comes fully assembled. Dimensions: 22" x 16-3/4" x 1-1/2". (Ship Wt.: 4 lbs.)

Features:

  1. Extra wide 5-1/2" entrance board
  2. Can be used without bottom board also - debris will just fall on the ground.
  3. Ideal for all integrated pest management of Varroa - by using our white trays or a sheet of heavy, white cardboard, you can closely monitor the mite fall when using miticides.

Improved: Wider screen opening on our Varroa Screens. We have changed the hardware mesh on our varroa screens from 8 mesh to 6 mesh. This will allow more wintertime hive debris to fall through but still keep mice and other critters out.

Hint: If you reverse the bottom board and have the old entrance facing out the back, you can do your monitoring from the back of the hive - that is unless you have the hive up against a wall or a fence.

Make Your Own: We sell the #5, #6 and #8 Mesh Cloth for those beekeepers who wish to build their own Varroa Screen.
